The 2012 Chateau Vrai Caillou is one of the many selections of fine vintage wines from Bordeaux that are now available at Clark Wine Center and other wine outlets of Yats Wine Cellars in Manila.

History: The Vrai Caillou estate has belonged to the Pommier family since 1863. Passed down through the generations, it has been handed over from father to son and then from father to daughter. Vrai Caillou wines are the fruit of a long family tradition which has developed alongside the estate’s endless rows of vines. Even though the Féret guide, Bordeaux’s acclaimed wine guide, refers to the Pommier estate as early as 1863, the surrounding land was primarily used for mixed crop farming and vines were just simply the angel’s share. It was Georges Pommier, great-grandfather of Christel de Meillac, who, in 1920 decided to concentrate his efforts on wine growing. (from Ch. Vrai Caillou)
This wine has recently been awarded the French Gold Medal by the Ministry of Agriculture for the quality of their wines.

Climate and Viticulture: Located in the middle area of Bordeaux located between two rivers, the Garonne, and the Dordogne. This area is further from the sea and enjoys a more continental climate. The rivers bring in warming air currents that protect the old vines from frosts. The major variety is Sauvignon Blanc, giving this blend crisp acidity that makes it pair well with rich foods and seafood. It also has the grassy aromas of Sauvignon. Semillon in the blend gives a citrus and floral bouquet that is similar to white flowers and also gives the wine a medium body.

Tasting notes: Crisp, and refreshing, this wine would pair well with a lot of salty and rich foods, Grassy hints push through flavors of lemon zest, and white flowers. The wine has a fuller body than regular Sauvignon because of the Semillon in the blend, making it a good pair for creamy soups as well.
