Château Meyney is undeniably one of the oldest properties in the Médoc. In 1662, the owners were the Feuillants Fathers, who started plantations. Today the vineyard lays on of 51 hectares of contiguous stretches of beautiful ridges overlooking the Gironde, the proximity of the river, so closely linked to the first rows of vines, giving the landscape a serene majesty.

The area remained for several years in the hands of the family Luetkens before being bought in 1919 by Désiré Cordier. Since 2004 Chateau Meyney belongs to CA Grands Crus, a subsidiary of French bank Crédit Agricole, which invests in every effort to explore the potential of this superb Cru Saint-Estephe.

In 2006, a plan of action long term developed by the team Thierry Budin, Director General, with the help of oenologist Denis Dubourdieu, has been initiated, with significant investments in the vineyard as well as in the wine-making equipments. Also, a new bottling chain is operational since spring 2008.

The soil
Planted on a siliceous grave soil, vines aged 35 to 40 years on average are divided between Cabernet Sauvignon 60%, 30% Merlot and Petit Verdot 10%.

The Chateau Meyney overlooks the Gironde, its position near the river protects the vines from freezing in winter, while cooling and moisting the air in the summer. A slope is fairly gradual climb accused the vineyard of 51 ha up to 20m high, facilitating the natural drainage of land.

There is here a vein of blue clay subsoil, very similar to the one found at Petrus, running about 2.6 m deep and about 3 m thick. These remarkable natural factors give the wine a rich constitution altogether exceptional.

The harvest is manual. Sorting tables are installed in the vineyards. Upon arrival at the vat, the crop is sorted once more by hand with great care.

The winery
After double sorting of grapes in the vineyard and the winery, each lot is vinified separately in stainless steel tanks and concrete. The length of the vat is 30 days including 22 of maceration and 8 of fermentation, controlled by thermoregulation.

Breeding lasts from 18 to 24 months depending on the vintage and is made in oak barrels of which 40% are renewed each year.

The area produces 160 000 bottles. Young vines of the property give rise to a second wine of Meyney Prieur.

The 2006 vintage shows good at Chateau Meyney, it is currently available on the French market for an approx. 25€/bottle (average retail price, according to millesima.fr).

The company CA Grand Cru, owned by Credit Agricole, is the owner since 2004 of five prestigious chateaux in Bordeaux including the Grand-Puy Ducasse Pauillac, Rayne Vigneau Sauternes and to Montrose St. Estephe.
